PURPOSE:To improve the illumination effect of the titled reader and to attain the miniaturization for a transmissive original reader, by forming a linear light source set at the back of an original with a cylindrical reflector, a slit-shaped window part formed in the lengthwise direction of the reflector and a light emitting source provided in the reflector. CONSTITUTION:A linear image sensor 1 of a transmissive original reader is fixed to a substrate 5, and an original 2 is carried by feed rolls 3 between the sensor 1 and a transparent pressure plate 4. The back of the original 2 is illuminated by a linear light source 6. The luminous flux transmitted through the original 2 is received by the sensor 1 and converted into electric signals. While a cylindrical reflector 8 is formed to a glass tube 7 of the source 6, and a fluorescent layer 9 is put on the reflector 8. Then a slit-shaped window part 8a is formed to transmit the light. Both the reflector 8 and the layer 9 are removed by the part 8a, and a light emitting source 10 consisting of the mercury steam is enclosed into the part 8a. This improves the illumination effect and attains the miniaturization for a transmissive original reader.
