PURPOSE:To increase the degree of freedom in the control of EGR by a method wherein a control valve operating information, different in first operating area, in which a primary suction valve only is being operated, and in second operating area, in which both of the primary and secondary suction valves are being operated, is utilized to control the amount of EGR. CONSTITUTION:The compound air suction type engine is provided with primary air suction system 1A, equipped with the primary suction valve 18 being operated overall the whole operating area of the engine, and secondary suction air system 1B, equipped with the secondary suction valve 19, being operated in one part of the operating area and equipped with a valve operation stopping mechanism. In this case, a pressure responsive unit 5 and a solenoid valve 11 are equipped to control the operation of an EGR control valve 4 interposed in an EGR path 3 while said unit and valve are controlled by a controller 12. The controller 12 is equipped with first and second setting means M1, M2, setting the control valve operating informations for the first operating area, in which the primary suction valve 18 only is being operated, and the second operating area, in which both of the suction valves 18, 19 are being operated, respectively and is constituted so as to select these setting means M1, M2 in accordance with the operating condition of the engine. |
