PURPOSE:To decrease the material strain of a pair of transparent substrates arising from the bending force from the outside by forming rugged surfaces to the edge end faces of the substrates facing each other via a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal display device 10 is provided with the upper substrate 11, the lower substrate 12, transparent electrodes 13 formed on the inside surfaces of the substrates, a liquid crystal 14 interposed between the substrates and polarizing plates 15, 16 joined to the outside surfaces of the substrates. The rugged surfaces 17 are integrally formed to the end faces at the edges 12a, 12b of the substrate 12. The rugged surfaces 17 consist of plural projecting parts 18 projecting outward into an arc shape. The parts 18 are continuously formed from one end 12c toward the other end 12d of the substrate 12. As a result, the internal stress generated in the substrate by the bending force from the outside is dispersed and the bending angle at which a defective mode is generated is made as small as possible. |
