PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic head which is less in fluctuation and excellent in head output, by obliquely inclining the growing direction of columnar crystals comprising ferromagnetic thin metallic films forming a magnetic gap to the normal line of the substrate at a prescribed angle. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic head of this invention is constituted in such a way that ferromagnetic thin metallic films 8 and 9 are respectively put between nonmagnetic guarding materials 10 and 11 and butting faces of the thin films 8 and 9 constitute a magnetic gap 12, whose track width is equal to the thickness (t) of the thin films 8 and 9. The growing direction B of columnar crystals of the thin films 8 and 9 is inclined by an angle theta to the normal line Y to the respective contacting surfaces between the thin films 8 and 9 and the guarding materials 10 and 11. When the angle theta is within a range of 5 deg.-45 deg., the growth of the columnar crystals is fixed because of the oblique incidence and variation of the magnetic characteristic due to the change in the sputtering condition and difference in the arranging position of substrates does not occur much. Furthermore, the roughness and fineness between the columnar crystals and inside the crystals produced by the oblique growth disperse the deformation produced when the head is manufactured. The magnetic head thus obtained has a large reproducing output and suppresses the fluctuation of the output. |
