PURPOSE:To facilitate the detection of the maximum value of correlation, to make the capacity of memories small and to shorten the time required for correlation operation, when a moving body is tracked by the correlation, by predicting and compressing the image of an input, and converting the image into the data, which is not correlated. CONSTITUTION:A tracking device has the following parts: an A/D converter 2, which converts the image signal from a TV camera 1; image memories 6 and 7, which store the image data for every specified time; a moving-position computing circuit 9, which tracks the moving body from the change in position of the maximum value of the correlation of the image data; and a predicting and compressing circuit 4, which predicts and compresses the A/D converted image data, converts the data into the non-correlated data and outputs the data into the memories 6 and 7. The predicted and compressed data of the images at a time point and at a time point after a specified time period are stored in the memories 6 and 7. The partial imade data, which is taken out of the memories 6 and 7 that are controlled by a memory controller 8, is computed by a correlation operator 10. The amount of the deviation of the partial image, whose correlation value becomes the maximum, is obtained. The circuit 9 adds the amount of deviation to the intial value, and outputs the result as the position of the tracked image after the specified time period. This procedure is repeated, and the moving body can be tracked.
