PURPOSE:To reduce user's load and to guarantee the uniqueness of identification information by automatically forming unique identification information, adding the formed information to document control information, informing the added information to the storage request side, and filing the identification information together with a part of the document control information as a key independently of document contents information. CONSTITUTION:The document storing/retrieving device 3 is constituted of a request analysis part 4, a response assembling part 5, a storage control part 6, an extraction control part 7, and a document storage part 8, respective identification numbers of a cabinet and a holder are displayed by keying from an I/O terminal 1a and a proper number is keyed while referring to the display to command the storage of the document. Consequently, a control part 61 in the storage control part 6 controls a receipt number generation part 62 to form a unique identification number., returns and displays the number to/on the terminal 1a and adds the number to the ducument control information to write the added result in the storage part 8 together with the document contents information. Then, a document fetching request key on the terminal 1a is depressed to display the document fetching picture and the receipt number is keyed to display required information, and after checking the display, document fetching is executed.
