<p>1482520 Tumbler dryers T I DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 29 July 1974 [30 July 1973] 36140/73 Heading F4G A tumbler dryer comprises a drum 6 rotatable about its longitudinal axis, a rotatable impeller 9 for circulating air through the drum, a motor M for rotating the drum and the impeller, the direction of rotation being periodically reversible, a casing enclosing the impeller for confining the output thereof and in which the casing is shaped so that the throughput of air through the drum is substantially the same for both directions of rotation of the impeller. The drum 6 is rotatably mounted between a front panel 2 and a rear channel member 3 closed by a back plate 4 and is rotated by the electric motor M and a belt 8, a driving shaft passing through a circular opening in the member 3 and supporting the impeller 9. A side wall 11 with extensions 13 and 14 is mounted on the member 3 to surround the impeller and direct the air to apertures 15 in the member 3 having access to apertures in a rear wall 16 of the drum. The air is heated by a heating element in a housing 8 mounted between the extensions 13, 14. The electric motor is reversed at least once during the drying cycle by a switch actuated by a timing device. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), an impeller has vanes of less height and mounted between curved front and back guide surfaces. In other modifications the axis of the casing may be vertical and may support smoothing vanes for air flow over the heating element. The casing may comprise a corner of the channel member 3. The heating elements may be mounted on a diverter plate 34, Fig. 7 secured to the channel member 3 which also supports a stub shaft 32 for the drum. Air from the impeller passes over the heating elements before passing through apertures 30 and thence through apertures in the drum.</p> |
