High chromium, low carbon, steel is produced from molten steel containing 0.8 to 1.0% C, by blowing with an argon/oxygen mixture, through an inserted lance. The lance comprises two concentric pipes. Initially a hydrocarbon fluid, e.g. natural gas, is blown through the outer pipe, and argon/oxygen, in the ratio 1:3 through the inner. Blowing continues until the C content is reduced to 0.02 to 0.03%, the argon/oxygen ratio being progressively increased to 3:1. The ratio of the mixture to the hydrocarbon fluid is held at about 10:1. - method is cheaper than either using electric furnaces conventionally or the alternative AOD method. The injection tuyere is cooled by the natural gas flow, and is mounted on a water-cooled holder, so it has a good service life. It can be adapted to a variety of furnaces and for injection of other substances.
|
