A water-insol. polymer capable of absorbing 300 parts by wt/ of water is made by (a) gelatinising starch at 50-90 deg.C; (b) polymerising the starch gel with polyacrylonitrile in molar ratio 1:1.5 to 1:9 in presence of ammonium nitrate and cerium; (c) saponifying the polymer in aq. suspension with alkali in ratio to polymer of 0.1 to 7.1;and (d) drying at 130 deg.C until the moisture content is 1-15 wt.%.
