Process and apparatus for generating steam

The generation of steam 15 in a boiler 12 with the use of solid, fine-grained, carbon-containing materials 4 is carried out in such a manner that these materials are first gasified preferably in a high temperature Winkler reactor 1 and the resulting gas 11, predominantly composed of CO and H2, is conducted directly into the boiler 12 and burnt there. Gasification reactor 1 and boiler 12 are expediently combined to form one structural unit. The sulphur liberated from the carbon-containing materials 4 is already substantially bound in the gasification reactor 1 with the use of CaO or equivalent substances. The fact that gaseous fuel 11 is burnt in the boiler 12 facilitates the keeping of operating conditions which substantially avoid the formation of NOx. <IMAGE>
