The paper machine press section has, in the running direction of the web (W), at least three successive separate press gaps (N1, N2, Np) which essentially drain the web (W) and between which the web (W) is between closed guides. The draining takes place at least in the first press gap (N1) through both surfaces of the web (W), the first gap (N1) being formed between two press rollers (24, 25) having an expediently hollow-profiled surface. In the press section, there is a first cloth (20) which serves as a pick-up cloth to which the web (W) is transferred from the forming wire (10). The press section includes at least one upper cloth (30) and lower cloths (40, 50), those cloths which are the first (20, 40) in the running direction of the web (W) being water-absorbing press cloths which are arranged in such a way that one of these first cloths serves as a press cloth in the first gap (N1) and the other cloth serves as a press cloth both in the first press gap and in the second press gap (N1, N2). Of the cloths (30, 50) which are second in the running direction of the web (W), the upper cloth (30) is a water-absorbing press cloth, and the other, lower cloth serves essentially as a transport cloth (50) or belt which does not absorb water. The web (W) is taken downstream of the third press gap (Np) between closed guides by the transport cloth (50) or belt to the dry end which follows the press section. A so-called long-gap press (100) serves as a third separate pressing location ...
