NEW MATERIAL:A compound of the formula (R represents an organic compound residue having n or more phenolic hydroxide groups, excepting C6H5O- and CH3C6H4O- ; n is an integer >=1). EXAMPLE:Bisphenol A-glycerylcarbonate ether. USE:A material for industrial use. Since a chlorine-free epoxy resin prepared from the compound of the formula does not contain any chlorine based contaminant, it is especially suitable for LSI sealant use. It is also useful as a raw material for urethane resins, medicines and agricultural chemicals. PREPARATION:A compound having phenolic hydroxide groups (example; 2,3- xylenol, 2,4-xylenol, catechol, bisphenol A, etc.) is reacted with a glycidylalkyl carbonate to form the compound of the formula. Although the reaction can be carried out non-catalytically, it can be completed in a shorter period by using a catalyst such as triethylamine or NaOH.
