PURPOSE:To increase bulk density of a starting material bar after sintering in the prepn. of a single crystal by the floating zone process and to obtain a single crystal having high quality with high reproducibility by mixing a metal which forms an eutectic mixture with the starting material, with the starting material. CONSTITUTION:The metal (e.g. metallic chromium, etc.) which forms the eutectic mixture with the starting material (e.g. powdery alumina. etc.) is mixed with the starting material. By this method, the starting material bar having high bulk density after sintering is obtd. easily, and crystals having high quality is prepd. with high reproducibility.
