An electrical cable having a plurality of insulated main cores, which are possibly surrounded by a common insulating sheath, which cable at one end contains a plug element for connection to a voltage supply, has at least one further protective core along the cable and a relay which isolates the main cores from the voltage supply in the event of a protective core being cut through. In order to ensure reliable isolation of the main cores from the voltage supply with a low energy consumption, if the cable is damaged and the protective cores are at the same time cut through, all the protective cores are earthed and are individually connected to the inputs of a gate circuit which places the relay in the switched-off state if a protective core is cut through.
