The hydrostatic torque converter contains just one hydraulic pump but this is rotatably mounted and rotationally connected to the input or output shaft of the torque converter. The flow of pressure medium effected by the hydraulic pump can be throttled, down to the shut-off condition if required, by means of a throttling member. An increasing torque is imparted to the pump by virtue of the fact that rotation is imparted to the pump and hence to the output shaft of the torque converter when the countertorque on the output shaft is exceeded. The torque converter has a very high efficiency which increases as the output speed increases. It can be used as a transmission with infinitely variable speed in machine and vehicle construction. <IMAGE>
