A gripper head with a number of suction holes for firm suction on the normally essentially flat surface of a package layer carries a valve in each of its suction holes. If no mating surface of the package layer lies below the suction hole, this valve automatically closes this suction hole. This valve preferably has a valve chamber connected to both the vacuum chamber of the gripper head and to a suction opening and is controlled by pressure differences which occur, so that it closes automatically if an excessive amount of external air is drawn in through the suction opening.
