The invention relates to a method for monitoring a section of track for the presence of rail vehicles by means of at least two induction loops arranged in the course of the track and having an evaluation circuit, the change in inductance in the said loops when rail vehicles pass through being measured in the evaluation circuit. In order to ensure reliable monitoring of the entire train even at different speeds when entering or leaving the monitored section of track, in each case at least one induction loop is arranged at the start and at the end of the section of track to be monitored. The induction loops are identical with respect to their mechanical and electrical design. In the evaluation circuit, the curve of the change in inductance measured is determined as a function of time for each induction loop, stored and the curves of the oscillator frequency resulting therefrom are compared to one another with regard to their characteristics. In such a comparison of curves, the duration of the respective change in inductance of one curve is matched to the duration of the change in inductance of the other curve by changing the time scaling.
