PURPOSE:To produce the titled polymer having high molecular weight and free from impurities, at a low cost, by mixing a 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid compound with a comonomer and water, irradiating the resultant liquid mixture with ultraviolet radiation, and polymerizing the liquid in the absence of ultraviolet radiation. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer can be produced by mixing (A) a monomer composed of 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid and its salt with (B) a monomer copolymerizable with the component A (e.g. acrylic acid) and (C) water, irradiating the resultant monomer mixture with ultraviolet radiation, and polymerizing the composition in the absence of ultraviolet radiation. The contents of the components A and B in the copolymer are preferably >=5wt% and <=95wt%, respectively. Preferably, the post-polymerization is carried out at <=100 deg.C, and the monomers are polymerized on the surface of a substrate such as polymeric nonwoven cloth or porous sheet, etc.
