An integral multilayer analytical element utilizable for detemermination of an analyte in a liquid sample such as a body fluid which comprises: a porous spreading layer of knitted fabric, which is able to spread a liquid sample applied thereonto in a lateral direction so as to supply the liquid sample into the below-mentioned water-absorbing layer at a substantially uniform volume per unit surface area; a water-absorbing layer containing a hydrophilic polymer; and a light-transmissive, water impermeable support. The spreading layer and/or water-absorbing layer may contain a reagent which participates in the detection reaction.
