Sensor arranged to detect the proper placement and quantity of one or more inserts (25) in the cavity (18) of an injection molding machine. The sensor (20) is preferably formed of a spring-biased plunger (27) through one of the cavity shells (29). A photodetector monitors the movement of the plunger as the cavity-forming shells are closed and activates an alarm signal if the plunger movement is excessive before detection of proper mold closure (23).
