PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having extremely low residual catalyst content and suitable as an electrical material, by preparing a polyacetylene by the use of a mixed catalyst composed mainly of a transition metal compound and an organometallic compound, and purifying the polymer by contacting with a specific solvent. CONSTITUTION:Polyacetylene is produced by polymerizing acetylene using a mixed catalyst composed mainly of a transition metal compound (preferably tetraethoxy titanium, etc.) and an organometallic compound (preferably triethyl aluminum, etc.), and is purified by contacting with an ether solvent (e.g. THF, etc.) acidified with hydrochloric acid, preferably at room temperature - 150 deg.C. The concentration of the hydrochloric acid used in the acidification of the ether solvent is preferably 0.1-5N.
