HIGH STRENGTH PLASTIC OPTICAL FIBER AND ITS MANUFACTURE

PURPOSE:To obtain a plastic optical fiber having superior tensile strength and causing hardly elongation and fracture by drawing a plastic optical fiber specified times or more at a prescribed temp. above the glass transition point of the core material. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 8 consisting of a core of plastics such as polymethyl methacrylate or polystyrene and a clad of plastics such as a vinylidene chloride/tetrafluoroethylene copolymer or silicone resin is manufactured with an extruder 1. The fiber 8 is introduced into a drawing furnace 5 regulated to a temp. which is above the glass transition point of the core material by 10-50 deg.C through pulling rolls 3, etc. In the furnace 5, the fiber 8 is drawn >=1.5 times by regulating the peripheral speeds of the rolls 3 and drawing rolls 7 to obtain a high strength plastic optical fiber having >=13kg/mm.<2> tensile strength.
