PURPOSE:To obtain a reproducing picture without noise even at double speed mode movement by controlling the tape speed stepwise at each n times at the movement of the double speed mode. CONSTITUTION:A capstan FG signal having a frequency proportional to the tape feeding speed is inputted from a terminal 51 and extracted at a phase locked loop PLL circuit 56 with, e.g., n=16 multiple. The frequency dividing ratio is set at a variable frequency divider circuit 57 according to the command of a speed command circuit 64 and the result is fed to a speed control circuit 64. A phase error signal is fed from a terminal 59 of the circuit 58 and a speed error signal is outputted in response to the frequency of the input signal of the circuit 58. The output is amplified variably by a variable amplifier circuit 60, the signal from the circuit 58 is controlled to be a constant frequency at all times, its output drives (61) a capstan motor to control the turning speed and the turning phase of the capstan motor 62 deciding the tape feeding speed.
