PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a small spacing loss, a small decrease in the reproduced output of a high frequency and excellent durability by forming a protective film having good resistance to wear and corrosion on a magnetic film which is deposited by diagonal evaporation on a non- magnetic substrate. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic film 2 consisting of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film such as Co-Ni is formed by a diagonal vapor deposition method on the non- magnetic substrate 1 consisting of a polyethylene terephthalate film, etc. and thereafter the protective magnetic film 3 consisting of ''Permalloy(R)'', Co-Cr alloy, iron nitride, etc. is formed by a sputtering method, etc. thereon to the thickness within a 10-500Angstrom range. The decrease in the reproduced output in a high-frequency region is prevented by the film 3 and the magnetic recording medium having the excellent resistance to wear and corrosion is obtd.
