PURPOSE:To enable driving with a low voltage by forming plural grooves having the length corresponding to the thickness of an electrooptic element in the direction coincident with the incident direction of light, forming electrodes on the side faces and bases of the grooves and making the electrodes formed in the respective adjacent grooves into counter electrode pairs. CONSTITUTION:The optical shutter element is provided with a polarizer 24, the electrooptic element 21 on which the light from a light source 26 is made incident via the polarizer 24 and an analyzer 25 having the optical axis intersecting orthogonally with the optical axis of the polarizer 24 on which the light past the element 21 is made incident. The plural grooves having the length corresponding to the thickness of the element 21 in the direction coincident with the incident direction of the light are formed on the face of the element 21 intersecting orthogonally with the incident face and exit face of the light by having the specified depth in the normal direction of said face. The electrodes 23 are formed to the side faces and bases of said grooves and are so constituted that the electrodes formed in the respective adjacent grooves are used as the counter electrode pairs. |
