In a process for laterally guiding paper machine cloths such as wires and felts, a transmitter device (20) is arranged in the vicinity of the edge of the cloth (W) to be guided, from where vibrations are directed onto the region of the edge of the cloth (W) to be guided, on the basis of which the lateral position of the edge of the cloth (W) is detected. An ultrasonic vibration cone (U) is directed onto the edge region of the cloth (W) to be guided, and the vibration cone reflected by the edge region of the cloth and/or the vibration cone going past the edge are received, a signal (a) being formed which is used for laterally guiding the cloth (W) concerned. The main object of the invention is to provide a scanning device for paper machine cloths, by means of which the scanning can be carried out reliably and without impairing the cloth and the scanning element. The device can be fitted at a protected point and is insensitive to most types of interference from the surroundings.
