The present invention discloses a method of treating or preventing a Streptococcus pneumoniae infection wherein the Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is pneumonia which occurs in a lung of a human patient suffering from the deficit of Znand/or Mn, comprising the step of administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of the polyhistidine triad family (PhtX) protein to the human patient, wherein the PhtX protein is selected from the group consisting of PhtA, PhtB, PhtD and PhtE. The invention also discloses the use of a pharmaceutically effective amount of the isolated PhtX protein in the manufacture of a medicament for treating or preventing such infection.
