NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is H or 1-3C alkyl). EXAMPLE:1,3:2,4-Bis-O-(2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl-4-piperidinylidene)sorbitol. USE:Photo-stabilizer for synthetic polymers such as PE, PP, PVC, polyurethane, ABS resin, etc. PREPARATION:The triacetoneamine derivative of formula II or its salt is made to react with sorbitol in the presence of an acidic catalyst (preferably p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc.) or a dehydration agent (e.g. calcium chloride), optionally in a solvent such as toluene, preferably at 60-200 deg.C. The amount of the compound of formula II is preferably 1.8-2.2mol, and that of the acidic catalyst and the dehydration agent is 0.1-3mol each per 1mol of sorbitol.
