PURPOSE:To improve the regeneration performance of a linear part by obtaining the overall density as well as the density distribution within a dot matrix and deciding a desired output dot matrix based on said two types of discrimination data. CONSTITUTION:A group number deciding circuit 26 calculates the total density or the average value of input picture elements of an input dot matrix to obtain the overall density of the matrix and selects the corresponding group of an output dot matrix. At the same time, a pattern number deciding circuit 27 decides the density distribution of input pictures and selects an output dot matrix approximate to said density distribution out of the selected groups. Thus the display gradation is decided with each output dot. Thus it is possible for the output dot matrix to regenerate the directivity for the density deviation existing within an input dot matrix in addition to the gradation display. Thus the sharpness of a linear part can be maintained.
