NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [G is group of formula II or formula III; R1 is (halogen-substituted) <=10C hydrocarbon group; when R1 is (halogen-substituted) aromatic hydrocarbon group, H in the R1 group may be substituted with -OG group; n is integer of >=1 when R1 is free from substituent -OG group, and is 0 or integer of >=1 when R1 has substituent -OG group]. USE:A raw material of epoxy resin. The epoxy resin prepared therefrom has excellent heat-resistance and low absorptioin, and is useful as a highly heat-resistant composite material when reinforced with a high-modulus fiber. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting alpha- naphtol with the aldehyde of formula R2-CHO [R2 is (halogen-substituted) <=10C hydrocarbon group] in the presence of an acidic catalyst (e.g. protonic acid), and reacting the reaction product with epichlorohydrin or beta-methylepichlorohydrin.
