PURPOSE:To obtain alpha-tocopherol having high vitamin E activity, in high yield and purity, economically in an industrial scale, by adding formaldehyde, etc. to a tocopherol other than alpha-tocopherol, and hydrogenating the tocopherol in the presence of an alkali metal bisulfate, etc. CONSTITUTION:1mol of beta, gamma, or delta-tocopherol is added with preferably 3-10mol of formaldehyde or its polymer (preferably paraformaldehyde), and hydrogenated in the presence of preferably 0.3-0.5mol of an alkali metal bisulfate (preferably lithium bisulfate, etc.) or aromatic sulfonic acid (preferably p-toluenesulfonic acid), usually in an inert organic solvent (preferably methanol) preferably at 140-170 deg.C and 20kg/cm<2> pressure.
