The system comprises two parts, partly a drilling submarine for working on the seabed and partly a power unit which consists of a smaller underwater vessel equipped with an electrical generator driven by a Diesel or Stirling engine. Also provided is a cable whose length is varied with the aid of a winch, which transmits electrical power to the drilling submarine. During drilling on the seabed, at depths down to 500 metres, the submarine rests on telescopic legs secured by a hydraulically downwardly-driven screw. On the smaller underwater vessel is a snorkel which has an ice drill and ducts for air intake and exhaust gas outlet. The vessel is unmanned and is monitored from the operating room on board the drilling submarine. |
