Water retainers sold and used in permeable bags or packets. They are contained in permeable bags or packets 1 which make it possible for them to swell by absorbing water by spraying and to restore it, after having been arranged at the bottom of the pot 9, as the plant requires it, and this with a fast and clean handling by the user. The packaging of the said water retainers in the bags or packets 1, where they are free, allows them a maximum swelling resulting in a maximum efficiency in their ability to retain water. The structure of the bag or packet 1 is such that it is permeable to water but impermeable to the crystals of products 2; moreover, the structure of the bag 1 can make it possible for roots to enter into the bag 1 and to come into direct contact with the water-retaining product 2.
