A metallic surface is formed on a substrate by (a) applying on the solid substrate an organofunctional silane of formula (RO)aSiRcR1X(I) , opt. mixed with another silane of formular (RO)bSiR2(4-b) (II), or its partial hydrolysate; (b) drying the tr eated surface; and (c) depositing a metal on the substrate to form a thin continuous metal layer. Where R is C1-4 alkyl; R1 s C1-12 difunctional hydrocarbon gp., or -(CH2)3NH(CH2)2-; X is -NH2, -NH CH2p-C6H4 CH=CH2Cl-, -SH, OH or Cl;R2 is phenyl or C1-4 alkyl; a and b are 2 or 3; c is O or l; and a+c is 3.
