PURPOSE:To produce a high-bulk density copolymer stably at a high rate of production, by controlling the formation of a low-MW copolymer, by subjecting a supported Ziegler catalyst system to a specified prepolymerization treatment in the compolymerization of ethylene with an alpha-olefin in the presence of the catalyst system. CONSTITUTION:A hydrocarbon-insoluble solid catalyst is formed by heating a hydrocarbon solution containing a magnesium compound (e.g., diethoxymagnesium) and a titanium compound (e.g., tri-n-butoxymonochlorotitanium) with an organo-aluminum halide compound (e.g., ethylaluminum dichloride). Ethylene is polymerized in he presence of the above solid catalyst and an organoaluminum compound in an inert hydrocarbon solvent (the rate of polymerization per g of solid catalyst is 10g/hr, polymer yields of 5-100g). Next, ethylene is copolymerized with an alpha-olefin at 100 deg.C or below in a usual manner.
