PURPOSE:To ensure the handling of an information storage medium with a simple mechanism, by providing a medium carrier which carries the information storage medium under a grasping and holding condition, and an opening section which temperarily holds the medium. CONSTITUTION:An information holding and retrieving device is provided with a medium carrier 15 which carries an information storage medium 5 under a grasping and holding condition and an opening section 20 which temporarily holds the medium 5. The information storage medium 5 is carried among medium containing racks 10, information reading and writing device 30, and the opening section 20 by means of the medium carrier 15. Since the information reading and writing device 30 is surrounded by the upper and lower medium containing racks 10 and 10 and the racks 10 and 10 are arranged almost symmetrically about the device 30 in such type of large-scale information holding and retrieving device 1, both an information storage medium 5 contained in a location near to the device 30 and another medium 5 contained in another location far from the device 30 can be carried to the device with no significant time lag, and thus, the information storage media can be handled surely with a simple mechanism.
