PURPOSE:To speed up the reading processing of a picture by applying skip or quick drive to a drive means in response to storage information of a storage means storing a position of an original where picture information is represented in space information and driving the means quickly at a forward path more than the speed at a return path. CONSTITUTION:Since it is not required to read correctly the original picture information in the forward movement by a drive section 22 different from that at the return movement, that is, since the reading having only on detect the space information of an original 13 is enough, the section 22 applies faster driving more than that of the return movement. Then a memory 20 stores the space line information read by a line image sensor 14 via a preamplifier 16. As soon as the forward movement of the original 13 is finished, a control section 23 transmits a control signal to the drive section 22 via a drive control section 21 so as to command the return movement of the original 13. The drive control section 21 controls the drive section 22 to apply skip of the line scanning or quicken the drive speed in the scanning of the space of the original 13 where no information is recorded from the content of the memory 20.
