PURPOSE:To obtain a highly stereoregular polypropylene in good yields per catalyst, by polymerizing propylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising an active titanium catalyst prepared in a specified manner and an organoaluminum compound. CONSTITUTION:An active titanium catalyst is prepared by copulverizing magnesium chloride with an oxygen-containing organic compound (e.g., diethyl ether or ethyl benzoate) and a halohydrocarbon (e.g., carbon tetrachloride or trichlorobenzene), irradiating the copulverizate with ultraviolet rays and/or visible light and treating this by contact with titanium tetrachloride. Propylene, alone or together with other alpha-olefins (e.g., ethylene), is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising the above obtained active titanium catalyst and an organoaluminum compound (e.g., triethylaluminum or diethylaluminum chloride) to obtain the purpose polypropylene.
