PURPOSE:To provide a water-base adhesive having excellent adaptability to high- speed machines, low-temperature adhesion and heat resistance, by polymerizing vinyl acetate in a specified ratio in an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion by using polyvinyl alcohol as a protective colloid. CONSTITUTION:An emulsion (A) of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer having an ethylene content of 10-40wt%, 2-40pts.wt. (per 100pts.wt. said copolymer) polyvinyl alcohol (B) having an average degree of polymn. of 200-3,500 and an average degree of saponification of 80-99% and water (C) are mixed together to form a polymn. phase, 10-200pts.wt. (per 100pts.wt. said copolymer) vinyl acetate is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst such as potassium persulfate in said polymn. phase at 60-95 deg.C to form a water-base polymer. Additives (e.g. plasticizer, filler, adhesion improver for water-repellent surfaces, etc.) are blended with said polymer to obtain a water-base adhesive.
