The invention relates to processes for thermochemical treatment of metals. The process forming the subject of the invention, consisting in forming on the pieces to be treated a coating resulting from the cementation of their material by an agent originating from a liquid metallic solution based on metal of low melting point, is characterised in that the cementation is carried out at a temperature of 720 to 820 DEG C for a sufficient time to obtain the specified thickness of the coating, within a solution in which the metal of low melting point is sodium or lithium and the cement an intermetallic compound. The invention can be applied especially to obtain coatings imitating precious metals (gold, platinum) in their physicochemical properties.
