PURPOSE:To realize interchangeability between VTRs, by forming a tracking error signal from a pilot signal, reproduced from the 1st partial track and the 2nd partial track arranged in a line with the 1st one, and making the maximum tracking deviation quantities in right and left directions equal to each other. CONSTITUTION:When a head phase switching signal SW is at ''H'', a rotary head scans video tracks on a magnetic tape and, when the signal SW is at ''L'', the head scans sound tracks on the magnetic tape. Pilot signals thus obtained are supplied to a tracking error detecting circuit 43 through an LPF42. The fH and 3fH components are respectively supplied to peak holding circuits 50 and 51 through envelope detecting circuits 48 and 49 and switches 55 and 56 controlled by the signal SW. The circuits 50 and 51 hold peak values of signals Pl and Pr by means of a pulse from a timing pulse generating circuit 44 and the peak values Plmax and Prmax are used as a tracking error signal TR through a differential amplifier 52. Therefore, interchangeability between VTRs having an optional head scanning characteristic can be secured.
