PURPOSE:To obtain the titled copolymer excellent in strength, etc., and suitable as a paper reinforcing agent or the like, by copolymerizing a specified cationic monomer with an epoxy monomer and a vinyl ester in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator and saponifying the copolymer. CONSTITUTION:A cationic monomer of formula I (wherein R1 is H or methyl, R2 and R3 are each H or a lower alkyl, n1 and n2 are each 1-2, A is a group of formula II or III, R4, R5, and R6 are each H or a lower alkyl, and X<-> is an anion), e.g., a compound of formula IV, is copolymerized with an epoxy monomer having a (meth)acryloxy group or a 3-butenyloxy group, e.g., allyl glycidyl ether, and a vinyl ester (e.g., vinyl acetate) in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator (e.g., benzoyl peroxide). The obtained polymer is saponified with an alkaline catalyst (e.g., sodium hydroxide) to obtain the purpose cationic polymer.
