PURPOSE:To obtain the titled highly polymerized copolymer excellent in heat resistance, etc., by polycondensing an aromatic hydroxyamino compound in an aqueous alkali solution with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid dihalide in the presence of a specified polymerization catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydroxyamino compound of formula I (wherein R1- R4 are each H, a halogen, cyano, a 1-5C alkyl, or a like group, and X is a direct bond, O, S, carbonyl, a 1-7C alkylene or a like group), e.g., 4-hydroxy-4'- aminodiphenyl, and an aromatic dihydroxy compound of formula II (wherein Ar<1> is a bivalent aromatic group), e.g., bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methane in an aqueous alkali solution are polycondensed with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid dihalide of formula III (wherein Ar<2> is a bivalent aromatic group and Y is a halogen), e.g., terephthaloyl chloride, in an organic solvent in the presence of a polymerization catalyst selected from the group consisting of crown ethers, cryptands, and quat. phosphonium salts. In this way, the titled copolymer excellent in heat-resistance, moldability, and electrical and mechanical properties can be produced.
