In a process and apparatus for treating water sediments composed of sands and gravel sands and finer and/or lighter particles, in particular containing organic constituents, such as sapropel, mud and/or river loads of clay and silt in which the material withdrawn from the body of water, after removal of coarse matter, is separated into a gravel sand portion on the one hand and a portion containing the sands and the finer and/or lighter particles on the other hand and subjected to a mechanical dewatering, in particular for the desludging of rivers, harbours and lakes, the separation of the sand and gravel sand portion from the finer and/or lighter particles is optimised by carrying out the separation of the sands from the finer and/or lighter particles in a fluidised bed apparatus, in which a) a fluidising liquid flows through a vessel (18) directed upwards from an inlet base (19) and leaves via an overflow (21), b) the material freed from coarse matter and gravel is placed in the vessel (18) from above and forms a heavy slurry with the fluidising liquid, b1) the sands sinking downwards and being withdrawn in the base region of the vessel and b2) the finer and/or lighter particles (floating material) floating on the heavy slurry and being withdrawn with the fluidising liquid at the overflow (21) of the vessel (18). <IMAGE>
