PURPOSE:To prevent a pen from being dried up by checking the quantity of instructions in a buffer memory where storing instructions from a host computer are stored temporarily and storing the pen position when the buffer memory is empty for a certain period. CONSTITUTION:A prescribed quantity of recording instructions from a host computer 1 are taken into a buffer memory 21 of a plotter 2. Recording instructions inputted to a recording control circuit 221 in a control circuit 22 are subjected to arithmetic processings and are outputted to a pen driving mechanism 23 and are recorded. When the buffer memory 21 is empty for a prescribed period, a monitor means 222 generates an output signal to a state storage means 224 and a storing signal means 223. When this output signal is received by means 224 and 223, the state storage means 224 stores the pen position, the pen type, etc. at this time, and the storing signal means 223 issues a recording pen storing instructions to the pen driving mechanism 23.
