The write/read magnetic head of a layered construction for a recording medium to be magnetised perpendicularly has a conducting element which guides the magnetic flux and has two pole pieces (magnet legs), the poles of which, facing the recording medium, are arranged one behind the other, as seen in the direction of movement of the head, and one under the other at a predetermined distance, and includes furthermore a magnet coil device for writing and reading. The intention with this magnetic head is to perform a switchable writing and reading function with high efficiency in each case by means of a relatively simple construction. For this purpose, the invention provides that the magnet coil device (20) comprises a writing coil winding (21) and a reading coil winding (22), which are respectively assigned to one of the pole pieces (7, 8), that in a central zone (16) a magnetic shunt (18) is formed between the two pole pieces (7, 8) and that the pole piece (8) with the assigned reading coil winding (22) in the central zone (16) consists of a magnetisable material of a predetermined Curie temperature, which can be heated beyond this temperature during the writing function. <IMAGE>
