The invention relates to a liquid counterflow heat exchanger for treating pulpy after-products occurring in sugar factories, which is provided with a plurality of cooling and reheating columns which are coupled in series and are provided with brake arms mounted on their circumferential surface and, between said arms, with tube members which rotate about a tube axis, contain a counterflow liquid and have the form of coils in the vertical direction. In this case, the tube members consist of V-tube segments which are arranged in a plurality of levels, and of intermediate tube segments which alternately join the limb ends of said V-tube segments between in each case two levels and hug the tube axis. It is advantageous for the number of brake arms to differ from the number of tube members and for the brake arms to be arranged shifted relative to one another level by level.
