An elongate composite element for forming prefabricated building parts, such as door and window frames, wall elements and the like, comprises metal profiled rails (2, 3) which are thermally insulated at least with respect to each other and which are fastened on each other via a non-metallic intermediate element (6) held between them in a positively locking manner. In order to avoid the profiled composite unit bursting apart as a result of the excessive, unbalanced thermal expansion of one of the profiled rails (2, 3) in the event of a fire, the positively locking connections are formed as sliding connections which can be displaced independently of one another in the longitudinal direction (8) of the profiles and which, in the temperature range below 300 DEG C, are retained in the non-displaced desired position by a sliding attachment (adhesive-bonding connection 9, screw connection 10). <IMAGE>
