PURPOSE:To prevent decrease in print quality due to the decrease in print density by generating a beam having a strength of an intermediate level in addition to the recording strength and the non-recording strength so as to apply shade to a printed character. CONSTITUTION:An FF227 contributes to the discrimination of the shadow based on the level change in lateral direction (line direction and an FF 228 contributes to the discrimination of the shadow based on the longitudinal level change (vertical direction). Suppose that a serial data to be written from now is read from a line memory 213 and sets an FF226, since the preceding data in line direction is given in the FF 227, a shadow signal S48 is outputted when the present data is at ''0'' and the preceding data is at ''1'' for example. Similarly, the data of the preceding line and the data of the present line are compared by a gate 223, and when the data of the present line is at ''0'' and the data of the preceding line in the same horizontal direction position is at ''1'' for example, the FF is set and the shadow signal S48 is produced. Moreover, the shadow signal is produced when both the FFs 227, 228 are set.
