PURPOSE:The alkylation of phenols with an olefin especially isobutylene is conducted by using oxides of titanium and molybdenum excellent in alkylation power with isobutylene. CONSTITUTION:The alkylation of phenols with an olifin is conducted by using oxides of titanium and molybdenum as a catalyst wherein the weight ratio of TiO2 to MoO3 is preferably 25/75 -99/1, especially 40/60-99/1. The olefin used is, e.g., isobutylene-containing fraction such as spent C4 fraction. The reaction temperature is 50-300, preferably 60-200 deg.C. The present method can produce 0-alkylated products and nucleus-alkylated products over a wide variety of proportions by selecting the reaction condition and the catalyst composition. For example, p-t-butyl- phenol is obtained in high yield from phenol and spent C4 fraction. |
